Bangor 62 Westby 54 (3/5/2011)
3/5 boys basketball: Parr sparks Bangor past Westby
Many times this season, the Bangor High School boys basketball team has had to rely primarily on Connor Kaiser and Adam Wuensch.Against Westby in a WIAA Division 4 regional final on Saturday night, Kaiser and Wuensch got plenty of help.
Senior Andrew Parr had 14 points, including four free throws late in the fourth quarter to help seal a 62-54 victory over the Norsemen in front of a packed house at the Logan fieldhouse.
Bangor (18-5) plays top-ranked Blair-Taylor (24-0) in a sectional semifinal on Thursday at Mauston, Wis. The Wildcats beat Bangor 73-52 on Dec. 3.
Bangor trailed by four points early but rattled off the next nine points and held Westby (17-7) scoreless for a 5-minute, 20-second stretch that spanned the first and second quarters.
"They definitely had a lot of energy," Bangor coach Jordan Laufenberg said. "They've worked hard all season long to get to this point, and it's just outstanding."
Parr kept the energy going in the second quarter, scoring back-to-back baskets, and sophomore Adam Meyers and junior Kyle Wright followed with consecutive 3-pointers to give Bangor a 30-20 lead at halftime.
"They did a great job," Wuensch said. "That was the key to our success."
Laufenberg was happy to see a season's worth of preparation pay off.
"We've preached that since the beginning of the season. Everybody on the floor has got to be a threat," Laufenberg said. "Everybody has got to be out there wanting to score, wanting the ball; it doesn't matter who it is."
After halftime, Wuensch was able to take over in the post. He had 16 of his 22 points in the second half, many of which were the result of fighting off different Norsemen players for offensive rebounds.
"He's just a heck of a player. (Westby) had some good players down low, but I like our chances with Adam against anybody," Laufenberg said.
Wuensch finished with 22 points and 14 rebounds.
Wuensch often found himself surrounded by Westby players, and that left teammates open for easy shots, which
they knocked down consistently throughout the night.
"We definitely knew (Wuensch) was going to have some trouble. We thought they were going to double- or triple-team him so I knew I had to step up," Parr said.
The Norsemen were able to claw back early in the fourth quarter, hitting four 3-pointers in the first 3:20 to draw within 50-49 with 3:51 to play. Sophomore Tyler Ihrcke had eight of his 10 points during that stretch to help Westby keep it close.
Bangor was able to close out the game from the free-throw line, with Wuensch, Kaiser, Parr and Meyers all hitting free throws down the stretch.
"Everybody stepped up tonight, and we need that for the rest of the playoffs," Kaiser said.
